William F. Whitmore Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep at Colonial Oaks Rehab Center in Marion, Indiana, on February 7, 2025. Born on December 6, 1926, in Columbus, Ohio, he was 98. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law (Sandy and Stan Hurt), children (Mary Ellen, Margery, Angela, Robert, and Quinteena), plus nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth (Whitehead) and William Whitmore Sr., and brother, Bobby.
He was employed at Continental Can Company in Elwood, Indiana, for 35 years and briefly as a greeter at Walmart—a natural—he never met a stranger. He was a longtime resident of Marion and Fairmount, Indiana.
Billy loved football and especially baseball. His Cubs team was always a subject he could discuss with anyone, cheering them on no matter what. Monday mornings were special to him. For years, he met with his buddies Waylon, Hulio, Don, and Dave, drinking coffee and chatting. These friendships meant so much to him. His last 3 1/2 years were spent at Colonial Oaks, where he enjoyed lunch trips with other residents and chatting with the staff. He always had a positive outlook on everyone.
A graveside service will be held sometime in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Anderson, Indiana. Date is to be determined.
