Harry "Scotty" Mertens passed away on April 28, 2022 due to heart failure and pneumonia in Indianapolis, Indiana. Harry resided in Columbus, Indiana, with his wife, Regena Rae Mertens (Burns), for the past 32 years.
Harry was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 18, 1940 to Agnes Kaleilehuaonalani Mertens (Kalehua) and George Mertens, and moved to Hawaii as an infant. Harry grew up and attended school in Oahu, Hawaii, then moved to Maui, Hawaii, in his 40s. He moved to Columbus, Indiana, in 1990. Harry worked in a few fields, most recently as a Facilities Manager of Bartholomew County Jail, retiring years ago. He additionally worked as a jeweler in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Maui.
Harry is survived by his wife Regena Rae Mertens (Burns) of 35 years, 6 children (1 deceased), 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, and numerous others. His children are Jeffrey Scott Mertens, Laura Kim Mertens, Harry Sanford Mertens (deceased), Denisse Kimberly Low, Russell Sean Mertens, and Bernadine Kerriann Mertens. His brothers are Christy Leonard Tyler II, Nicholas Trellis Tyler, and Russell Leonard Tyler.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life service on Saturday, August 6th at 10 a.m. at Valley of the Temples Cemetery in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Reception immediately following (location to be determined). Note that the celebration of life services will be for Harry Mertens and his son, Harry S. Mertens, who passed in March 2020, but services were postponed due to covid.
