Gene “Annette” Huerta (née Hamlin), 67, of Spencer, Indiana, passed away on April 29, 2024, at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington, Indiana, after a brief but valiant fight against cancer. Born on November 24, 1956, in Gardena, California, Annette was the youngest of 4 children.
Prior to retiring in 2019, she was an Assistant Manager in the Deli and Bakery at Babbs Supermarket.
Her hobbies included crossword and table puzzles, reading, and cooking. She loved to share her fondness for oldies music like The Temptations and the Four Tops with her children, in addition to campy comedies like Police Academy and Weekend at Bernie’s.
Annette’s life was simple, and she will be dearly remembered by the warm smile and laughter she brought into every room. Her home was always open — to her four children, to friends of her children who she embraced as her own, and to anyone in need, and always to fur children; as a lover of all felines and other strays her children managed to bring home.
Annette’s life was a profound testament to selflessness, particularly in the way she cared for her children and grandchildren, always prioritizing their happiness and well-being above her own, which she did so humbly. Her humor, her selflessness, and her ability to make everyone feel loved were her true legacies.
Annette’s is survived by her four children, Alicia (Pete) Wesner, Jessica (Jared) Myers, Melissa (Jafe) Alora, and Andrew Huerta; grandchildren Austin, Felicity, Amaya, Mason, Phoenix, Jett, Oliver, Javin, Rozlind, Sawyer, and Ember; nieces and nephews; and an extended family of those she adopted into her heart, including her honorary daughter, Brittani Winders, and honorary granddaughters Peyton and Isla.
Annette is preceded in death by her husband, Andrew “Rudy” Huerta, her parents, Donald and Donnie Hunt, her sister Bonnie Kranzler, and brothers Larry and Donald Jacob.
Her children leave you with this Sara Rian quote:
And if I must love you
At this new distance
I will love you so fiercely
It will be felt in every universe
That lies between us
