MT. VERNON, IN - Dorothy "Dotti" Jean (Hornick) Cleveland, 58, passed January 20, 2021 in Deaconess Midtown Covid-19 ICU Unit. Her family gives thanks to health care workers risking their lives, bravely caring for those sick with Covid-19. We specifically would like thank the Covid staff at Deaconess for their valiant efforts trying to save her and others in ICU fighting this deadly virus.
Dotti was born on December 29, 1962 at Deaconess Midtown, the youngest of 5 children of the late Michael "Jim" Hornick II and Glenda "Sue" (Cartwright) Hornick. She grew up on Evansville's Westside. She graduated from Reitz High School in 1980. She moved to Posey County when she married and lived there most of her adult life. She had three children, one grandson and many friends.
Although she was a bit stubborn at times, she was known to be soft-spoken, courteous, loving, friendly and kind. She never met a stranger. She loved her family and friends dearly and was a dedicated mom and grandma. In the end, her adult children begged her to go to the doctor when she was coughing and having difficulty breathing but she insisted she was fine until it was too late.
She was preceded in death by her father Jim Hornick II; niece, Angel Frances (Peak) Key and precious infant son, Jonathan Ray Cleveland. She said "He took a piece of my heart with him to heaven." Although we rejoice in their reunion, she will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.
She is survived by her mother, Sue Hornick, of Sunrise, FL; Beloved children, son, Steven Wayne Cleveland; ‘twin' daughter, Terra Lea Cleveland; cherished grandson, Evain Nathaniel Cleveland; spoiled dog, Gizzy; ex-husband and lifelong friend, James Elis Cleveland; all of Mt. Vernon; Siblings; sister, Vicki (Robert) Gardner of Evansville, IN; brother, Michael (Kim) Hornick, of Hazelton, IN; brother, Allyn (Leanna) Hornick, of Hardin, KY; sister, Patricia (Larry) Willard, of Sunrise, FL; and so many aunts, uncles nieces, nephews and cousins from a large family in IN, KY and FL.
Due to the pandemic, there can be no visitation or funeral at this time. Per her wishes, cremation was handled by HALO Cremations. A formal celebration of Dotti's life will be held later when her family and friend can safely gather.
Until then, stay safe, hold your loved ones in your heart, use video chat to stay in touch. Covid-19 is not a political matter, it is real, it is relentless and it is merciless.
If you feel ill, please seek medical care before your family has to write your obituary. And for everyone's sake, please wear a Mask.
